“How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” starring Jim Carrey, is a big-budget remake of the classic cartoon that tells the story of a creature intent on stealing Christmas.

Carolina Christmas visitors are encouraged to arrive early to see the more than 3 million lights in 600 different holiday displays, then visit the Christmas Village in the Charlotte Motor Speedway infield before the movies begin. Once in the infield, visitors will be instructed where to park to watch the movies and will receive information via the world’s largest HDTV on which FM radio frequency to tune into to hear the movie audio.

The Ayden Chamber of Commerce proudly presents the 25th annual Ayden Christmas Parade.  Entries for this year’s parade are open to the public.

In 1891, a farmer in the southern part of what is now Pitt County, decided that a portion of his farm would make a great place to live if only it had a railroad depot. William Henry Harris was able to convince the Atlantic Coast Line of the same, and soon a 40 acre parcel of land was divided into residential lots surrounding a depot in “Harristown”, with Mr. Harris owning every other lot. Within the next several years, lots were sold and homes built. Businesses began to spring up to support the new residents, and on February 3, 1891, the Town was incorporated as “Ayden”, a name, as area story tellers claim, discovered by a local on a map of the world. Within a few years, the Carolina Christian College and the Free Will Baptist Seminary were established. By 1919, Ayden had full-time electricity supplied by the Ayden municipal power plant. In 1922, the Mutual Building and Loan Association of Ayden was organized to help families obtain mortgages to build homes in Ayden.

All are welcome to participate in The Home Town Christmas events where Main Street is decked out in all its Christmas lights and holiday finest. Sponsored by the Saluda Business Association, this long-standing tradition has become a way for Saluda residents to come together and celebrate the holiday season. Businesses and shops are open from 6-8pm and serve holiday refreshments while local musicians perform. The open house and musical events are closed with an ecumenical service delivered by Saluda ministers at the Saluda Presbyterian Church.

The Meadow Lights is the largest and oldest Christmas light show in eastern North Carolina.  We are a Family owned and operated business that started more than 40 years ago.  In 1994 we built “The Old CountryStore” to sell drinks and old fashioned candy.  Since we have become one of the largest candy stores in the state specializing in Christmas and old fashion candy, carrying over 300 varieties. We display lights on over 30 acres and operate a train ride through 10 plus acres.  “The Meadow Lights” was started almost 40 years ago when the owner, Mr. Roy D. Johnson, began decorating his home and yard for his children to   enjoy.  Each year he decorated a   little more than the year before.  It didn’t take long before others   in the community began enjoying  the lights also.  Each year as the  lights grew, so did the number of   people who came to see them.  Since then, the lights have grown  from a single decorated yard to  over 30 acres of lights and from   the community riding by to  thousands from all over the state  each year.

Countless hours are placed throughout the year in making High Country Lights, “Northwest North Carolina’s Premier Animated Light Show.”  100% of all donations made to High Country Lights are returned back to the community.  Not one cent is used in the production, purchase, or maintenance of the display.  That is privately funded.

Parking is available at Glade Creek School and fire department parking lots.  We ask that you do not park in the area where the orange cones are placed.  That area is designated for fire trucks to quickly leave the building when they are called out at a moments notice.

If you’re planning to visit High Country Lights, make it a day trip.  Come to the mountains of Alleghany County, N.C. to find a fresh Christmas tree at a participating Choose & Cut tree farm.  Then, visit one of the manyrestaurants serving BBQ, homemade burgers, to seafood.  Finally, after topping off the tank with gas or food, come by and visit the light show.
